![]() However, Okoye is the only character I felt really connected to and she is stupidly sidelined a third into the movie. Angela Bassett deserves all the credit she's been receiving. Ramonda is a pleasant surprise in this movie. She never struck me as someone who would willingly become the Black Panther and there isn't much impact when she does anyway. Some don't match her at all and her vengeful arc is just T'Challa's from Civil War with a less fitting character. The changes to her character were perhaps necessary for this story, but it doesn't make them good changes for her. ![]() She was a fun (yet underdeveloped) carefree tech nerd in the original movie and here she takes a 180 to being reserved and bitter. I don't think Shuri works as the protagonist. My issues spring not from the T'Challa-related parts of the film, but from how the rest feels lacking without his presence. I really respect Coogler's decision to not recast, but I still wish T'Challa and Namor got to cross paths. You can clearly tell the original script was written before Chadwick's death. They incorporated the death beautifully and honorably, but the result is what feels like two movies in one. Regardless, I feel like the movie is a little too reliant on the audience being impacted by Boseman's passing.ĭon't get me wrong, the fully silent opening gave me chills. Now does Wakanda Forever handle the death of T'Challa/Boseman well? Absolutely! Being able to respect the legacy of the actor while also metatextually connecting the event to an in-universe tragedy is definitely one of the movie's standout features. When they confirmed he wouldn't be recast, I felt like it was a big mistake narratively. ![]() It is also simply too soon to pass the mantle of Black Panther on. It would've been incredibly hard to find a good replacement, but the character is very important to the Marvel universe. I always believed that recasting T'Challa was the only way to go. With that being said, when Chadwick Boseman sadly passed, I accepted that this franchise was doomed. ![]() I never thought the original Black Panther was anywhere near being the best solo Marvel movie, but I did enjoy it and T'Challa's character throughout his appearances. ![]() ![]() ![]() This is where some hefty speculation comes in. ![]() There’s definitely more of the violent robots than the passive ones, but there’s some interesting story to be uncovered here. Some are immediately outright aggressive, while others are just banging their heads into walls. All of the humanoid figures are limp and unresponsive, and the powered exoskeletons behave in various odd ways. Their frames, in more of auto-pilot, take control. They didn’t say this yet, but some insight I got from the behind closed doors gameplay demo was all the other people are dead. In fact, they are far more comfortable using those tools to rip your delicate fleshy bits from your metallic powered frame. Waking up after some kind of event knocked you out, you find that those helpful construction droids and power suits don’t seem very interested in helping mankind anymore. Don’t worry… the bang comes when the game opens and the robots go mad. It might seem like kind of a humdrum way for the world to end, with zero bang and all whisper. It’s a very grounded, stark foundation for the story. So humanity takes to space, hiring contract workers to go back down to the planet and tidy it up for everyone. Centuries of abuse and growing corporate control have left the earth just a shitty place to be. It wasn’t aliens or nuclear war that ended the world. This isn’t a future hundreds of years away, but the world we might be leaving our grandchildren. Taking the world of today, they asked themselves where they could realistically see technology, business, and the future of our species heading. That’s because Deck 13 wanted to go for more “real” than high sci-fi. Right off the bat, for a game that’s about hacking apart robotic power armors with laser axes, the aesthetic was more grunge than sci-fi. Though the game is still far from out of development, they had a lot to say about their vision for The Surge. As I stated in the video that you totally just watched, I got to talk to some of the team of Deck 13 about their upcoming title. ![]() |
